Toss The Lard In The Yard!

My blog is dedicated to any human (and maybe pets too!) who are eager to learn about health tips and share them with others.

My purpose: I have stacks of various health magazines! I wanted to figure out how I can continue using them, instead of throwing them all away. These magazines have so many excellent tips on health and wellness.

So, using my iPhone and Nikon D40, I am going to photograph all the various healthy tips found in all these magazines and post them here for you to use!

You and I will benefit. Our lives will be enriched!

EAT to fight fat and disease!

It's like getting a makeover! Start picking out your food like you would pick your makeup, hair style, clothes, and accessories!  They all gotta match inorder to make you look and feel like a goddess...check out the science behind pairing certain foods together and what it does for you:

Once you realize that there is a science behind food, you'll be on your way to keeping the weight OFF and tossing it in that yard. :)

NO need to bulk up on vitamins.  EAT your vitamins.

First thing you need to know...if you can pair up your foods appropriately, you're going to get the most benefit out of them.  Pair your foods up with the thought of creating a multivitamin.  This article pictured touches on a few vitamins that you will need to eat, in order to assist with loosing weight and keeping the weight off!
VITAMIN D, OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS, and CALCIUM work together to help torch fat and boost your metabolic rate. SO, think about that fact when putting certain foods together.  Find foods RICH IN THESE vitamins.  The one thing to realize is that Vitamin D comes in various strengths, and calcium comes in a variety of forms.  This article DOES NOT specify how many IU's of D you need (nor does it say the type...could be D-3?!).  And, in order to get your calcium to be properly absorbed, it really needs a catalyst like vitamin D...

So, THINK OF THE SCIENCE BEHIND FOOD...when you eat, try to pair things up to create a multivitamin (or if you're trying to burn fat, pair foods together that do just that!)

I love reading PREVENTION magazine for their MUFA diet (Food Magic to a Flat Belly!!!)  They have an iphone app now if you haven't seen it...it's great! You can get it here on iTunes: http://bit.ly/aif0Hb

Of course, consult a doc to find out if you're lacking any vitamins and start the process of adding certain foods into your daily intake.  The article offers a few foods to consider to get Vitamin D and Omega-3 Fatty acids.
Start doing your research to discover WHAT FOODS pack the MOST VITAMINS!! Kale for example is VERY Rich in nutrients.  I offer a few blogs to follow that have a ton of that sort of info.  I really like this one:

BURN an additional 305 calories!! K.I.S.S!!!!

I found this a great motivator.  Instant thought: "KEEP IT SIMPLE SISTAH!" Many days nothing can get me to that gym...it doesn't matter how many bon bons or bagels I've eaten the day before, when I'm tired, I AM STAYING HOME!  So, when I came across this little article from Cosmo's October 2010 issue, I instantly wanted to share it on Toss The Lard In The Yard!!

Get creative...if dancing around while making breakfast isn't your thing, come up with something else to get you moving.  I like the dancing personally.

Keep me posted, I'd love to hear what you do to burn an extra 305 calories a week. Good luck!!

SOMETHING'S FISHY ABOUT THIS!

I am not directly promoting the WINOmega3complex brand.  As for the purpose of my blog, I collect articles and info I find, and use it to promote health education to my readers and myself!  I'm currently taking the CVS brand shown below.

The label said on front of bottle: 1200 mg's of Fish Oil.  Well, Im confused, because the back of the bottle says, "1200mg Fish Oil", EPA, DHA, and TOTAL Omega-3 Fatty Acids: 360mg.  What?! I hate how it won't just tell me..."Jessica, take 3 pills throughout the day, each pill will have "x" amount of each oil."  So, does this mean Im getting 1,200mg of sometype of Fish Oil (im assuming it's anchovy/sardine's fish oil) and 360mg of EPA, DHA, and Total Omega-3 Fatty Acids in each pill?  Yuck! I hate labels.

On a not so positive note! I recently discovered a great deal of controversy surrounding Fish Oil Supplements!
According to an excerpt from Wikipedia: “A March 2010 lawsuit filed by a California environmental group claims that eight popular brands of fish oil supplements contained excessive levels of PCBs…” [1][2]
It should be noted, however, that the majority of these products were either cod liver or shark liver oils. Because the liver is the major filtering and detoxifying organ, PCB content will be much higher in such products than in the more common fish oil produced from the processing of whole fish.”

The products named in the PCB lawsuit are:
--CVS/Pharmacy (yaaay...that's the brand I am taking)
--Omega Protein
--Pharmavite, which produces Nature Made supplements
--Rite Aid
-- GNC Liquid Norwegian Cod Liver Oil
-- Nature Made Cod Liver Oil
-- Nature Made Odorless Fish Oil
-- Now Foods Double Strength Cod Liver Oil
-- Now Foods Salmon Oil
-- Now Foods Shark Liver Oil
-- Solgar 100 percent pure Norwegian Shark Liver Oil Complex
-- Solgar Norwegian Cod Liver Oil
-- Twinlab Emulsified Norwegian Cod Liver Oil
-- Twinlab Norwegian Cod Liver Oil

..."Nooo, that's exciting news to me!"

While Im posting about
B-A-N-A-N-A-S, we might as well discuss nature's big yellow treats!

Potassium...DUH!!!  - Bananas are a very good source of vitamin B6 and a good source of vitamin C, potassium, dietary fiber, and manganese. (thanks WHFOODS for your info!)
Many just think Potassium as the highest source of nutrients...but infact, Banana's are quite high in Vitamin B6, about 36% of our Daily Value!
Who may need extra vitamin B6 (an extra Banana a day) to prevent a deficiency?
[According to Dietary Supplement Facts http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/vitaminb6.asp] Individuals with a poor quality diet or an inadequate B6 intake for an extended period may benefit from taking a vitamin B6 supplement if they are unable to increase their dietary intake of vitamin B6 [1,15]. Alcoholics and older adults are more likely to have inadequate vitamin B6 intakes than other segments of the population because they may have limited variety in their diet. Alcohol also promotes the destruction and loss of vitamin B6 from the body.

You're KALE'LIN me with all this nutritional info! Whew!! :)

*UPDATE(11/19/2010)*
The "Eat plenty of leafy green vegetables rule may NOT apply to SOME" -

Tailor it: if you take the blood thinner warfarin (Coumadin).
This drug prevents dangerous blood clots by blocking the action of vitamin K, which is needed to make clot-building compounds in the blood—but too much K in your diet can overwhelm your protection. The nutrient is especially abundant in dark green, leafy vegetables such as spinach, Swiss chard, and kale, so don't have more than one serving of any of these in a day.

Research on Lutein and Zeaxanthin can be found:

So, based on the evidence, and all the excellent information,
will you choose KALE as a staple in your diet?
Tonight I simmered a large batch with organic free-range chicken broth.  They tasted okay, I would've preferred more salt, but I was trying the lower-sodium option for health purposes.  You can find many tasty recipe's all over the Internet for Kale.  If you have the ability, I'd highly recommend getting Organic Kale instead of regular!  You can achieve top absorption of the benefits by doing so.  *research for yourself! that's a whole 'nother blog! lol ;)
